City of Irvine Challenge Grant!
The ongoing state budget crisis is putting our schools, and our children’s education, at risk.
This crisis has forced our school district to cut $12.5 million from its budget. These cuts affect every student. Many IUSD teachers and staff members have received layoff notices and drastic cuts have been made to programs in health and fine arts. Our district is being forced to increase class sizes in grades 4-12 in order to keep other valued programs in place for our kids. Larger classes will greatly decrease the number of quality interactions between our students and their teachers, and make learning more difficult.
The State of California will NOT fix this financial crisis. The IUSD School Board and administration have done an outstanding job to keep the cuts away from the classroom, but there remains a significant need for funds. Because we value excellence in education, we must do all we can to support the quality education we expect for our children.
The Irvine City Council, led by Mayor Pro Tem Sukhee Kang, has stepped forward and unanimously voted to give more than $900,000 to help us solve this problem. This is an unprecedented and generous action and we applaud them for their leadership. This $900,000 has been offered as a matching grant. Every dollar donated will be matched one-to-one and requires that we all join the City of Irvine and donate money to our schools. The Irvine Public Schools Foundation (IPSF) has already pledged $500,000 toward meeting this match. We need YOUR help to raise the additional $400,000.
